BSC completes 1st stage of Webmail Change Project
The current Directors of BSC, concerned about the desires of members and seeking to offer state-of-the-art technology, have unanimously approved the institutional webmail platform change. This ambitious project, which demands investments in software and computers, had its 1st stage completed on Tuesday, June 10, 2008, with the implementation of a new anti-spam device.
Currently, with the gradual increase in the number of spams and techniques to bypass traditional filters, email users from all over the world have been receiving more and more spams in their inboxes, in addition to slow sending and receipt of messages.
To fight this problem, the BSC Information Technology Department and its staff carried out a thorough research of the tools on sale to combat this invasive practice, and chose to purchase the IronPort C150 Email Security Appliance, powered by IronPort Systems, an arm of Cisco Systems, worldwide recognized as a leader in gateways for the security of email and Web environments. The tool consists of a device that combines hardware and software operations and provides anti-spam and anti-spyware protection.
Just a few days after it was deployed, we could see a rather significant change. As an example, the BSC servers receive overall 2.8 m (2,800,000!) emails per day, and only 20,400 are valid messages. The rest is spam. Currently, after installing IronPort C150, 99.3% of spams are blocked before entering the email accounts of users.
The results obtained in the 1st stage of changes to the BSC Webmail showed that cutting down on spams was possible, improving the traffic of data, avoiding congestions and enhancing the defense against virtual threats.
Some innovations and upgrades are being prepared with the purpose of better serving the BSC members’ needs, further strengthening our society, offering reliable products and modern contents to fulfill our mission: “support our cardiologists in learning, development and updating.”
